Sunrider International Review (2026): The Herbal MLM, Its History and the Pay

If you have heard of Sunrider, it may be from a long-time IBO who has been with the company for decades. It is one of the older herbal companies in network marketing, and it is still run by its founding family.
This Sunrider review covers what it sells, what it costs to join, how the Infinity Compensation Plan pays, what the company's own earnings numbers say, and the 1990s tax case that every prospect should know about.
Quick answer: Sunrider International is an active herbal nutrition and beauty company, founded in Utah in 1982 by Drs. Tei-Fu and Oi-Lin Chen and now based in Torrance, California. Joining as an IBO costs $29.95, and its own 2025 disclosure says 90.55% of participating IBOs had no gross earnings that year.
I've been inside 8 network marketing companies since 2004, and I start every review with the company's own words. For Sunrider, I read its website, its 2025 Earning Disclosure Statement, its compensation plan sheet and its current price list, plus news coverage of its history. You can browse every company I've reviewed on one page.
Here's what I found.
What Is Sunrider International?
Sunrider sells herbal nutrition, body and beauty products, foods and drinks, and home goods, through Independent Business Owners (IBOs) and franchise store owners.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Founded | 1982, in Utah |
| Founders | Drs. Tei-Fu and Oi-Lin Chen |
| CEO | Sunny Beutler, JD |
| Headquarters | Torrance, California |
| Reach | Nearly 50 countries and territories |
| Sellers | Independent Business Owners (IBOs) |
| Status | Active in 2026 |
From its Our Story page, the company says the Chens' five children help guide it across nearly 50 countries and territories, in partnership with thousands of IBOs and franchise store owners. It also says its Texas manufacturing plant earned an NSF food-safety certification.
The company is putting money into tools for its sellers. In July 2025, it launched an AI-powered app called Sunrider Daily, replacing the Sunrider Connect app it released in 2024, according to Direct Selling News. It celebrated 40 years in business in 2022, per a company press release.
Who's Behind Sunrider?
Sunrider is still a family company. Its Our Story page, under the heading "Family Values at Work," names the founders, Dr. Tei-Fu Chen and Dr. Oi-Lin Chen, and lists Sunny Beutler, JD, as CEO. Dr. Reuben Chen, a board-certified physician, is its Chief Medical Advisor.
The family's business reaches beyond direct selling. The same page says the Chen family owns the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills and St. Ermin's Hotel in London, as well as a hotel group in Beijing and Taipei.
What Sunrider Sells
Sunrider's price list files its Fortune Delight packs under "Health & Well-Being: Cleansing." A few prices from its US price list, effective August 1, 2026:
| Product | Retail price |
|---|---|
| Fortune Delight Original, 30 packs (3 g) | $42.81 |
| SunFit Protein Plus (soy), 1.5 lb | $76.74 |
| SunSmile Herbal Toothpaste, 4.75 oz | $20.62 |
Preferred Customers and IBOs pay less than these retail prices. I haven't tested the products, and I'm not going to make health claims about them.
Is Sunrider an MLM? The Infinity Compensation Plan
Yes. Sunrider pays IBOs through what it calls the Infinity Compensation Plan. From the plan sheet on its site:
- Titles: IBO, then Star, Star Prime and Star Elite, then Ace through Ace Royal, then the leadership titles Hero, Hero Elite, Hero Royal, Icon, Icon Elite and Icon Royal.
- Retail Sales Bonus: paid weekly, from 15% to 30% depending on your monthly volume.
- Unilevel commissions: a percentage of the volume of IBOs below you, paid over several levels as your title rises.
- Fast Start incentives: bonuses for advancing in your first six full months.
- Leadership bonuses: from Hero and up, a match on the bonus earnings of the IBOs you lead.
That's a standard multi-level structure: pay on your own sales, plus pay on the volume of the people you sponsor.
What It Costs to Join
Sunrider's join page offers three ways in:
- Retail customer: free.
- Preferred Customer: $19.95.
- IBO: $29.95, with 15% off retail prices and access to the compensation plan.
The 2025 earnings disclosure adds the ongoing costs: a $29.95 annual renewal fee, which is waived if you meet the annual activity requirement, and that requirement is $400 a year. Shipping, events and business tools come on top.
What Sunrider's Own Earnings Disclosure Says
This is where Sunrider deserves credit for being plain-spoken. Its join page quotes its own 2025 Earning Disclosure Statement:
- 90.55% of participating IBOs had no gross earnings in 2025.
- Among IBOs who engaged in a business-building activity, 57.21% earned less than $1,000 for the year, and 91.60% earned less than $10,000.
- These are gross figures, before expenses, "which most IBOs do not earn enough to cover."
The company also says it "makes no guarantees of income or profit." I'm not going to quote what the top earners made, because the honest takeaway is the one Sunrider prints itself: most people who join don't earn much, if anything. Read the full statement before you decide.
The 1990s Tax Case
Most Sunrider reviews leave this out. It's a matter of public record, so here are the facts, from the Justice Department's own documents.
On March 1, 1995, a federal grand jury indicted Tei-Fu Chen and Sunrider, according to a Justice Department brief in the case. The department's press release on the pleas, reproduced by Quackwatch, says the grand jury indicted "the Chens and Sunrider," which brings in Oi-Lin Chen. That release also says:
- Tei-Fu Chen pleaded guilty to tax evasion and making false statements to the US Customs Service, and was sentenced to two years in federal prison. He also agreed to pay Customs $4 million to avoid forfeiting artifacts.
- Oi-Lin Chen pleaded guilty to aiding in the filing of a false corporate tax return, and was sentenced to two years of probation, including six months of home detention.
- Sunrider pleaded guilty to filing a false corporate tax return for 1989 and agreed to pay a $500,000 fine.
- In a related civil action, the Chens had already paid $93 million in back taxes, interest and penalties.
This case was about the founders' taxes and imports, not about how IBOs were paid, and it was resolved in the 1990s. If you've been a loyal IBO for years, it doesn't erase anything you built. But you should know it, because a prospect who finds it on their own will ask you about it.

The Good: What Sunrider Gets Right
- Longevity. More than 40 years in business, still run by the founding family.
- A low entry fee. $29.95 to become an IBO.
- Unusually honest numbers. It prints that most IBOs earn nothing and most don't cover their costs.
- Investment in tools. A new AI app in 2025 and active social accounts.
- Its own manufacturing. An NSF-certified plant in Texas.
The Concerns: What You Need to Know
- Most IBOs earn nothing. 90.55% had no gross earnings in 2025, by the company's own count.
- A $400 yearly activity requirement. That's real spending to stay active and skip the renewal fee.
- Premium prices. $42.81 for 30 packs of Fortune Delight adds up as a daily habit.
- The founders' history. Guilty pleas to federal tax and customs charges in the 1990s.

My Verdict: Is Sunrider Worth It in 2026?
One More Thing...
Sunrider's own numbers tell the story of most network marketing companies: a small group earns, and most people never get going. The difference usually isn't the product. It's who you can reach.
When you learn to share what you love online with people who are already looking for it, you stop depending on a warm market that runs out. And that skill works with any company, now or later.
That's what The Sponsoring System teaches. It's a free email series where I share the digital marketing that actually works for networkers. If you want it, start the free series here.
