Market America Review (2026): After the SHOP.COM Sale, Is the UnFranchise Worth It?

If you've ever been pitched the "Shopping Annuity," you've met Market America. For years the idea was simple: shop through SHOP.COM, get others to do the same, and earn on the volume.

Then, in September 2026, Market America sold the SHOP.COM name to Shopify. So what is the business now, and is it worth joining? This Market America review covers the big change, the cost to join, what owners earned in 2025 in the company's own numbers, and the legal history people ask about.

Quick answer: Market America is a Greensboro, North Carolina company founded in 1992 and led by co-founder and CEO Loren Ridinger. It sells Isotonix supplements, Motives cosmetics and other brands through UnFranchise Owners, who pay $149.95 to join. In 2025, half of the owners who earned anything made more than $550 for the year, before expenses.

I've been inside 8 network marketing companies since 2004, and I always start with the company's own words. For this review I read marketamerica.com's About, join, press and product pages, its 2025 income disclosure, the SHOP.COM sale release, the SEC's 1999 litigation release, federal court dockets, its BBB profile and its public social media numbers. You can browse every company I've reviewed on one page.

Here's what I found.

What Happened to SHOP.COM?

This is the biggest Market America news in years. On September 22, 2026, the company launched a rebuilt MarketAmerica.com on Shopify. Its press page says the new site "becomes the company's primary consumer shopping destination, replacing SHOP.COM."

Six days later, on September 28, 2026, Market America announced on PR Newswire "the completion of the sale of the SHOP.COM domain name to Shopify." Shopify President Harley Finkelstein said, "SHOP.COM is a world-class digital asset that has a natural home at Shopify."

When I visited shop.com on October 14, 2026, it showed Shopify's own Shop app, with no Market America content. If you built your business telling people to shop at SHOP.COM, that pitch now points to MarketAmerica.com instead.

Is Market America Still in Business?

Yes. When I checked on October 14, 2026, marketamerica.com was live with a "© 1992-2026" copyright, a "Save 20%" first-order code, and a 2027 Leadership School scheduled for February 25 to 27, 2027, in Miami Beach. Its YouTube channel posted that same day.

Market America calls its business opportunity the "UnFranchise Business." Owners sell the company's own brands and earn on the sales of the people in their organization.

Who's Behind Market America?

Market America was founded in 1992 by JR and Loren Ridinger. According to its About page, "Legendary founder JR Ridinger passed away in 2022," and "Co-Founder & CEO Loren Ridinger continues to lead the company." Its BBB profile lists Marc Ashley as President and COO.

The Ridingers built one of the best-known names in direct selling, and Loren Ridinger has kept it running through two big changes since: losing her husband and partner, and selling SHOP.COM.

What Market America Sells

Here are a few prices from marketamerica.com on October 14, 2026:

Isotonix OPC-330 servings$34.95
Isotonix Daily Essentials30 packets$77.95
Motives Satin Lip1 lipstick$19.95
Motives Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation1 foundation$39.95
GoTrim Slim30 servings$51.95

Isotonix is the best-known line, which the company describes as "isotonic vitamins and minerals." I'm not going to rate the products themselves. These are dietary supplements, so talk to your doctor before you start any of them.

What It Costs to Join Market America

Market America's 2025 disclosure says you become an UnFranchise Owner "for a subscription fee of $149.95," which "renews annually at $119.95." Health professionals pay $179.95 to start and $149.95 a year.

The join page offers two options, "Only $149.95 or $449.95," with the second including products. In October 2026, it also listed a "$299 Fast Start Kit through Oct 31st." You can also sign up as a Sales Representative at no cost, but the disclosure says that role is not eligible to earn commissions.

The refund terms are clearly written. Cancel within 30 days and the subscription fee is fully refundable when you return the kit. After that, the company refunds 90% of what you paid for resalable products bought in the past year.

How UnFranchise Owners Get Paid

Owners earn retail profit and commissions. The disclosure uses Isotonix OPC-3 as its example: a $74.95 suggested retail price against a $57.00 UnFranchise Cost, a potential profit of $17.95 a bottle. Owners also earn on the volume created by the people they sponsor. The company says commissions are paid weekly, and it states plainly, "You cannot earn money by only recruiting or only sponsoring other UnFranchise Owners."

I couldn't find the current compensation plan document on the new site, so I'm not going to spell out how the team commissions are calculated. Ask for the current plan in writing before you join.

What Market America Owners Earned in 2025

Market America publishes a yearly income disclosure, and I give it credit for that. Here's what its 2025 statement, published January 22, 2026, says about US owners:

  • About 30,000 UnFranchise Owners had an open account at least one day in 2025.
  • About 19,000 of them earned some income from their sales and their organization's sales.
  • Of those earners, half (about 9,600) earned more than $550 for the year, before expenses.
  • The top 10% (about 2,000) earned more than $4,250.
  • The top 1% (about 200) earned more than $45,000.

Read that carefully. By the company's own counts, about 11,000 of the 30,000 owners with an open account didn't earn income from the business that year, and the earnings figures are before the $119.95 renewal and any other expenses. The company's join page talks about building "financial success" over 2 to 3 years. The disclosure is the better guide to what most people actually make.

The 1999 SEC Case

People search for this, so here's what the record says. In 1999, the SEC's litigation release announced charges against a former stockbroker and JR Ridinger over illegal sales of Market America stock. It was about how the company's stock was sold after it went public in the mid-1990s, not about the business opportunity.

Without admitting or denying the allegations, Ridinger agreed to pay $404,694 in disgorgement, interest and a penalty. Market America itself, also without admitting or denying the findings, agreed to a cease-and-desist order over its SEC reports. That was more than 25 years ago.

The Pending Distributor Lawsuit

In May 2017, former distributors filed a class action against Market America in federal court in California, under the racketeering law known as RICO. The complaint alleges that the defendants "run an illegal pyramid scheme." A second case followed in 2019, and both were moved to federal court in North Carolina.

Market America sought arbitration, and in January 2020 the court stayed the cases pending arbitration. In 2025 the plaintiffs asked to reopen them, and the docket shows activity as recently as October 9, 2026. As of my check, there has been no ruling on the merits. An allegation is not a finding, and I'll update this review if a court rules.

I didn't find any FTC or state attorney general action against Market America. The watchdog group Truth in Advertising flagged its income claims in 2020 and again in 2023; it says the company removed most of the claims it flagged in 2020.

The Good: What Market America Gets Right

  • Long history. 34 years, led by a founder.
  • A low starting fee. $149.95 to join, refundable within 30 days with the kit returned.
  • An honest disclosure. Clear 2025 numbers, including how many owners earned income at all.
  • A strong BBB record. BBB Accredited since 2004, with an A+ rating.
  • A modern store. The new Shopify site is clean and current.

The Concerns: What You Need to Know

  • Modest typical earnings. Half of earners made more than $550 in 2025, before expenses, and about 11,000 owners with an open account didn't earn income from it.
  • A yearly renewal. $119.95 a year to keep your business.
  • The SHOP.COM change. The "shop through SHOP.COM" pitch is gone; the plan now runs through MarketAmerica.com.
  • Premium prices. Isotonix Daily Essentials is $77.95 for 30 packets.
  • A pending lawsuit. The 2017 distributor case is active again in North Carolina, with no ruling on the merits.

Market America vs Other Shopping-Based MLMs

If the shop-and-earn idea appeals to you, compare Market America with my Bonvera review, another e-commerce company, and Amway, where JR Ridinger was once a distributor, according to Wikipedia. For a company built on customers buying monthly, see my Melaleuca review, and for a supplement company with a long regulatory history, read my Juice Plus+ review. Compare them on the cost to start, the yearly renewal, and what their income disclosures say.

My Verdict: Is Market America Worth It in 2026?

One More Thing...

Market America always sold the idea of turning shopping into income. The part that decides whether that works is the same in every company: can you get in front of people who want what you offer?

That's a marketing skill, and it doesn't depend on a domain name or a pay plan. When you can build an audience online, you own it, whatever happens to the company you're with.

That's what The Sponsoring System teaches. It's a free email series where I share the digital marketing that actually works for networkers. If you want it, start the free series here.
