Thirty-One Gifts Review (2026): What Happened, and Where Consultants Go Next

If you ever owned a Thirty-One utility tote, you probably bought it from a friend. For 21 years (the company itself said 22), Thirty-One Gifts sold personalized bags through home parties, and its consultants were everywhere.

Then it closed. This Thirty-One Gifts review covers what happened, how the business worked, what the company's own income numbers said, and where fans and former consultants can go now.

Quick answer: Thirty-One Gifts is no longer in business. Founder Cindy Monroe told the field in October 2024 that the company would close by the end of 2024, and in October 2026 its website is a parked domain page.

I've been inside 8 network marketing companies since 2004, and when a company closes, I want the record, not the rumors. For Thirty-One, I read the trade press report of the closing, the founder's own statement as reported by USA TODAY, the company's US income disclosure statements, its own final Instagram posts, and what its website and social accounts show today. If you're comparing companies, all of my company reviews are on one page.

Here's what I found.

Is Thirty-One Gifts Still in Business?

No. According to Direct Selling News, Monroe told field leaders in a video statement on October 22, 2024 that the company would be closing, with an official end date "before the end of 2024."

Monroe also posted about it herself. As reported by USA TODAY, she wrote: "I shared with our internal team yesterday that we will close Thirty-One at the end of this year."

What it looks like now:

  • The website: when I checked on October 14, 2026, thirtyonegifts.com redirected to a parked domain page.
  • The company's own goodbye: on December 13, 2024, the official @thirtyone Instagram posted "Thank you for 22 Wonderful Years!" and said customers could "shop until Sunday, December 15th at Midnight ET." Its final post, on December 15, 2024, said: "Today is the last day to shop!"
  • YouTube: the company's channel still has 37.6K subscribers and 665 videos, but its newest upload is from December 3, 2024.

What Was Thirty-One Gifts?

Thirty-One Gifts was a party-plan company that sold personalized bags, gifts and home decor, according to Direct Selling News.

Monroe's goal, as she told Direct Selling News in 2019, was "to give women an opportunity to earn extra income while being able to stay at home with their children or have a second income with a flexible schedule."

At its peak the company was big. In May 2019, Community Impact reported that Thirty-One had started shipping from a new 651,000-square-foot distribution center in Flower Mound, Texas, moved from Columbus, Ohio, with more than 650 employees.

You can see where Thirty-One sits among hundreds of other companies in my MLM company directory.

Who Was Behind Thirty-One Gifts?

Cindy Monroe founded the company and led it to the end. In 2020, Kanbrick, an investment firm led by Tracy Britt Cool, a former deputy to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway, became a partner and owner of the company, according to Direct Selling News.

Direct Selling News also placed the closing inside a bigger trend: other direct sellers moving away from multi-level structures or closing in 2024, including BODi, Seint and Rodan + Fields, and Beautycounter's closing that April.

What Thirty-One Sold

Bags, mostly. The utility tote was the signature product, along with lunch bags, makeup bags, backpacks and organizers, many with personalization.

Here's the interesting part: people still want them. In my keyword research on October 14, 2026, "thirty one bags" still drew about 12,100 US searches a month, and "thirty one gifts large utility tote" about 1,300. The demand outlived the company. That's why the Product Alternatives section below matters.

Was Thirty-One an MLM? How Consultants Got Paid

Yes, in structure. The company's income disclosure statements defined consultant income as "commissions earned by a Consultant from Thirty-One for her sale of products and any applicable overrides as defined in the Career Path booklet." Overrides on a team's sales are the multi-level part.

The 2020 statement also spelled out the basic terms:

  • Active status: $200 in personal sales volume in a rolling three-month period.
  • Website: a monthly subscription, $16.95 plus tax at the time, for a personal website and branded emails.
  • No inventory: "Thirty-One Gifts does not require Consultants to purchase or maintain inventory and, in fact, our policies prohibit this practice."

That last point was a real strength. Consultants weren't stuck with a garage full of bags.

What Thirty-One's Own Income Disclosure Showed

Thirty-One published US income disclosure statements, and they're worth reading because they're the company's own numbers. Here's the 2020 statement:

Yearly income (gross)Share of consultants
Less than $125.2%
$1 to $9922.4%
$100 to $99941.3%
$1,000 to $1,9995.9%
$2,000 to $2,9991.9%
$3,000 to $3,9990.9%
$4,000 to $4,9990.5%
$5,000 to $9,9991.0%
$10,000 to $99,9991.0%
$100,000 and upLess than 0.1%

A few things the statement says plainly:

  • It covers 69,273 consultants who were active for at least one month in 2020.
  • The figures are gross income, not profit. They don't subtract samples, travel, phone or any other expense.
  • The top 1% of earners had an average tenure of 83 months, almost seven years.

Its 2017 statement covered 105,316 active consultants. So the active field shrank by about a third between 2017 and 2020, years before the closing.

That's not a knock on the people who sold it. Many joined for the discount or a little extra money, and the company said as much. It just tells you what the typical experience looked like.

How the Closing Happened

The closing came fast for the field. One consultant's account on Reddit, quoted by Distractify, described "about a 30 minute warning" before a webinar on October 22, a pre-recorded video from Monroe, a close effective December 31, and consultant websites going dark on December 16.

I couldn't find a detailed public reason for the closing from the company. The reports I read covered the announcement and the timeline, not the cause, so I won't guess at one.

What Thirty-One's Social Media Shows Right Now

These numbers were read on October 14, 2026.

Both accounts are time capsules. The YouTube channel has nothing new since early December 2024, and the official Instagram, @thirtyone, still has about 104,600 followers and 3,819 posts, with nothing new since its "last day to shop" post on December 15, 2024.

The Good: What Thirty-One Got Right

  • No inventory. Its policies actually prohibited consultants from stocking up.
  • Transparent income numbers. It published US income disclosure statements year after year.
  • A product people still want. Search demand for its bags is still strong two years after the closing.
  • A clear mission. Flexible income for women, stated by the founder from day one.

The Concerns: What You Need to Know

  • It's closed. There's no business to join, and old kits or "opportunities" using the name aren't the company.
  • Most consultants earned little. By the company's own 2020 numbers, 88.9% earned under $1,000 gross for the year.
  • A shrinking field. Active consultants fell from 105,316 in 2017 to 69,273 in 2020.
  • Little notice. By one consultant's account, the field had weeks, not months, to wind down.

Product Alternatives

If you loved Thirty-One's bags, you can still get the same kinds of products. Here's what I'd look at. These are alternatives, not copies, and I haven't tested them myself.

Amazon prices change often. Each listing showed the item in stock with that price on October 14, 2026. Thirty-One products also turn up on resale sites, if you want the original.

If You Were a Thirty-One Consultant: Where to Look Next

If you loved the party side of Thirty-One, other party-plan companies are still running. Look at Scentsy, Norwex, Damsel in Defense and Mary Kay. And for another famous name that didn't survive, read the Tupperware story.

Before you join anything, compare what it costs to start, what you have to sell each month to stay active, and what the company's own income disclosure says.

My Verdict: What Thirty-One Gifts Teaches Us

One More Thing...

Thirty-One consultants lost their websites on December 16, 2024. Their customer relationships, their parties and their sales all ran through a company platform that switched off.

That's the lesson I'd take from it. When you learn to build your own audience online, with content that brings the right people to you, nobody can turn that off. And it works with any product you choose next.

That's what The Sponsoring System teaches. It's a free email series where I share the digital marketing that actually works for networkers. If you want it, start the free series here.
