Discovery Toys Review (2026): The $75 Start and the 25% Commission

Discovery Toys has been selling educational toys through home parties and its own sellers for decades. Its BBB profile dates the business to 1978. A lot of people searching for it today want to know one thing first: is it still around?

It is. This Discovery Toys review covers who runs it now, what it sells, what it costs to join as a "Play Advisor," how the pay works, and the product recalls on the federal record.

Quick answer: Discovery Toys was started in 1978 by early childhood educator Lane Nemeth and is now run by CEO Jerry R. Salerno and COO Jim Myers. Its October 2026 offer let new Play Advisors join for $75 and pick $150 in toys, with 25% commission from day one and no monthly sales quotas. I couldn't find an income disclosure.

I've been inside 8 network marketing companies since 2004, and I always start with the company's own words. For this review I read Discovery Toys' main site and online store, its October 2026 recruiting offer, its BBB profile and three recall notices from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. You can browse every company I've reviewed on one page.

Here's what I found.

Is Discovery Toys Still in Business?

Yes. In October 2026, Discovery Toys' online store at discoverytoys.us was selling toys with a 2026 copyright. Its new Play Advisor offer for the month, a PDF also marked 2026, said "DT's Outstanding October Offer runs from October 1 - 31."

One small sign of a lean company: the footer on its main site, discoverytoys.net, still read "© Discovery Toys 2025" when I checked. You can compare it with other companies in the full MLM company directory.

Who's Behind Discovery Toys?

The company's Our Story page says it "began when an early childhood educator, Lane Nemeth, first brought together a group of dedicated teachers, mothers, and parents." It goes on: "After selling to groups of eager parents in the home, Discovery Toys, the network marketing / direct sales company, was born."

Today, the same page names Jerry R. Salerno as CEO and Jim Myers as COO. Its BBB profile lists both as co-owners and shows 12 employees, which makes this a small company compared with the brand people remember.

What Discovery Toys Sells

Discovery Toys sells learning toys for kids from newborns to school age. Marbleworks marble runs are the line people search for most. These were prices on its online store in October 2026:

ProductPrice
Marbleworks Grand Prix Racing Marble Run$66.50
Castle Marbleworks Chime Ball Drop Tower Toy$80.00
Baby Barbells Rattle Set$13.50
Super Yummy Teether$13.50
Bath Pipes Tub Toy$27.50

Compared with the Amazon alternatives further down, some of these prices are close and some are higher.

Is Discovery Toys an MLM?

Yes, and the company says so itself. Its Our Story page calls it "the network marketing / direct sales company," and its opportunity page says Play Advisors can earn "up to 34% profit on your personal sales and up to 7% bonuses on your team's sales."

Is it a pyramid scheme? I don't use that label for a company selling real products to real customers, and Discovery Toys sells toys to parents and grandparents. The company says there are no monthly sales quotas.

What It Costs to Join

Here's the October 2026 new Play Advisor offer, from the company's own flyer and opportunity page:

  • $75 to start, plus tax. You "select $150 in Products" to share with family, friends and customers.
  • Free storefront for three months. After that, the Premium package is "$9.95/month" and the Basic package is "$9.95/6 months."
  • The fine print on the $150. It excludes discounted bundles and Play Packs, doesn't count toward your personal sales, is "non-commissionable," and shipping is charged on that order.
  • Where you can join. The opportunity page says agreements can't be processed for Hawaii, Alaska, APO/FPOs and territories.

That's one of the lowest-cost starts I've seen: $75 for $150 in products at the company's prices.

How Play Advisors Get Paid

The October offer sums it up: "Earn 25% commission from Day 1 - - NO monthly sales quotas!" The opportunity page goes further, with "up to 34% profit on your personal sales and up to 7% bonuses on your team's sales."

There's also a starter goal. If you sell $500 or more in your first full month, you get to pick $100 in free products. The flyer adds that "you'll have earned $125+ in commission" by then, which is just 25% of $500.

What I couldn't find is an income disclosure. The company doesn't publish what typical Play Advisors earn, so I can't tell you. Ask your sponsor for the full compensation plan, and ask how many Play Advisors actually hit the $500 first-month goal.

The Toy Recalls

People expect a toy company to have a clean safety record, so here's what the Consumer Product Safety Commission has on file for Discovery Toys:

DateProductUnitsWhat CPSC reported
October 23, 2001Hello Baby toy phonesAbout 57,000Voluntary recall; the antenna ball could break off, a choking hazard. Eight reports of breakage, no injuries reported
April 2, 2002Up, Down & Around toddler maze toysAbout 21,000Voluntary recall; tubes could break and release beads, a choking hazard. Nine reports of breakage, no injuries reported
January 12, 2011Toy mobile phonesAbout 2,900 in the US and 700 in CanadaThe antenna could break off, a choking hazard; three incidents reported; remedy was a replacement toy

All three are more than 15 years old, and each was handled through the federal regulator. That's how a product problem should be handled.

The Good: What Discovery Toys Gets Right

  • A very low start. $75 for $150 in toys.
  • No monthly quotas, per the company.
  • 25% from day one. A clear starting commission.
  • Some prices are close to store alternatives. Bath Pipes is $27.50; a similar Amazon bath toy was $26.97.
  • A long history. Business started in 1978, per BBB, with an A+ rating (not accredited).
  • Old recalls handled properly. Through the CPSC, with no injuries reported in the two largest.

The Concerns: What You Need to Know

  • No income disclosure. You can't see what typical Play Advisors earn.
  • A small company now. BBB lists 12 employees.
  • Storefront fees after three months. $9.95 a month for Premium.
  • Not available everywhere. No agreements for Hawaii, Alaska or US territories.
  • A small online following. Under 4,000 Instagram followers.

Product Alternatives

If you just want the toys, you can buy Discovery Toys directly from its store without joining. If you'd rather shop around, these are similar.

What you wantDiscovery Toys product and priceAlternativeWhy consider it
A marble runMarbleworks Grand Prix Racing Marble Run, $66.50Hape Quadrilla Race to Finish$37.28; a wooden marble run from a well-known toy brand
A bath toyBath Pipes Tub Toy, $27.50Yookidoo Flow N Fill bath toy$26.97; about the same price, no Play Advisor needed
A budget bath or stacking toyBath Pipes Tub Toy, $27.50The First Years Stack & Count Stacking Cups$7.49; the cheapest option

The Amazon prices are the buy-box prices on each listing as of October 14, 2026, and all three were in stock. Prices change, so check before you buy. Discovery Toys' own prices are close to these on some items, so this is more about choice than savings.

Discovery Toys vs Other Home-Party Companies

If you like the idea of selling something for kids, read my Barefoot Books review, a children's book company I've also reviewed. For a classic home-party business, see my Pampered Chef review. Compare them on what it costs to start, what you keep on a sale, and whether you have to buy anything each month to stay active.

My Verdict: Is Discovery Toys Worth It in 2026?

One More Thing...

Discovery Toys grew up on home parties. Parents came over, played with the toys and bought what their kids loved. Today, those same parents are online, searching for the best toys for a 2-year-old or a gift for a grandchild.

When you learn to show up where those parents are already looking, you don't need a living room full of guests to make a sale. And that skill works with any product.
